Born September 27, 1972, in Los Angeles, California, Gwyneth Kate Platrow is an American actress and singer. From a filmmaking family—mother is actress Blythe Danner, father was filmmaker Bruce Paltrow—Paltrow got her first break in family friend Steven Spielberg’s Hook playing a minor role, though it was playing Brad Pitt’s doomed wife in Seven (and becoming engaged to him in real life) that launched Paltrow to fame. Her first major starring role was in 1996’s Emma, followed by Sliding Doors, Great Expectations, and Shakespeare in Love, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. She was considered for the role of Rose in the blockbuster film Titanic, though the role went to Kate Winslet. Paltrow has continued to work steadily in acclaimed roles, most recently in the Iron Man trilogy, Country Strong, and as a popular recurring character on Glee. She is married to singer Chris Martin from the band Coldplay (though they are currently separated), with whom she has two children: Apple and Moses.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s last name, 'Paltrow,' is a Polish name derived from the Yiddish given name Paltiel. Other spellings include “Paltrowicz,” “Paltrowitch,” “Palter,” Pelter,” “Palterovich,” “Polterowicz,” “Peltowicz,” and “Peltynowicz.”
